Before you leave Australia
- Tax residency — If you leave Australia for good, you may become a foreign resident for tax purposes. Check your position with the Australian Taxation Office before you go, and keep records of your departure date.
- Superannuation — Your super generally stays in Australia. If you were in Australia on a temporary visa, you may be able to claim it back once you have left and your visa has ended — check the rules for your situation.
- Medicare and insurance — Tell Medicare you are leaving, and arrange health cover in your new country from your arrival date.
- Your vehicle — Australian cars are right-hand drive. Shipping one to continental Europe is possible but often not worth it; to the UK or Ireland, it can be. Check the destination's import rules and registration costs before deciding.
- Proof of residence for duty-free import — Your destination will usually admit your used belongings duty-free if you can show you lived outside it — typically for 12 months — and owned your goods for 6 months. Keep your lease, bills and employment records.
Exporting your belongings from Australia
To another EU country: if Australia and your destination are both in the EU, your belongings travel freely. There is no export declaration and no customs clearance.
To a country outside the EU: we file the export declaration in Australia on your behalf. What matters most is the import side: whether your belongings enter your new country free of duty depends on that country's rules. Each destination guide explains them.
Wherever you are going, prepare a detailed inventory of your belongings. It is required at destination for almost every move outside the EU, and it is the basis of your insurance.
Your belongings travel by sea container — your own (FCL) or shared (LCL) — usually from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or Fremantle. We coordinate the export formalities and port booking in Australia and prepare the import file for your destination, including transfer of residence relief in the UK or the EU.
How a move from Australia works
- Free quote. Share your origin, your delivery address in Australia and roughly how much you are moving. A written quote lands in your inbox within 24 hours.
- Survey and planning. A coordinator confirms your volume and the transport mode, and reviews the customs rules that apply to your move to Australia.
- Packing and collection. We bring the packing materials to your home, inventory each piece and load everything on moving day.
- Transport. By road across Europe, or by sea container between continents — whichever best fits your route to Australia.
- Customs clearance (where required). Non-EU destinations get a two-sided customs file: we file the export from Australia and prepare the import at destination (Australian export formalities and port booking).
- Delivery and set-up. We deliver at your new address and, if you asked for it on the quote, unpack boxes and reassemble furniture.
A single point of contact handles your move from Australia from estimate to delivery.

How the price of your move from Australia is calculated
We price every move from Australia with the same ingredients — nothing hidden, nothing improvised:
- Volume — measured in cubic metres (m³) — the main cost driver. Our online volume calculator helps you estimate it room by room.
- Distance and route — measured on the actual road, from your door to your delivery address in Australia.
- Transport mode — shared road load, a truck booked only for you, FCL or LCL by sea, or air for very small cargo.
- Services — everything beyond pure transport: packing, dismantling, crating, short-term storage, extra legs by ferry.
- Access — top-floor flats with no lift, narrow lanes, long carries, external hoists when the stairs will not do.
- Customs — declaration fees and port or airport handling, when the route to Australia crosses a customs border.
- Insurance — priced as a percentage of what you tell us your belongings are worth.
Typical volumes, as a guide:
| Home | Typical volume |
|---|---|
| Studio | 10 to 15 m³ |
| 1-bedroom flat | 15 to 25 m³ |
| 2-bedroom home | 25 to 40 m³ |
| 3-bedroom home | 40 to 60 m³ |
| 4-bedroom house or larger | 60 m³ and more |
For road moves inside Europe, the estimator returns a starting price in two minutes. Sea freight, air freight and any move that crosses a customs border go through a written quote, delivered within 24 hours.

Frequently asked questions
- How long does a move from Australia to the UK take?
- Usually ten to fourteen weeks door to door by own container, longer by shared container. Many families send a small air shipment of essentials to bridge the gap.
- Will I pay import duty on my furniture in the UK or Europe?
- Usually not, if you move your main home and qualify for transfer of residence relief. In the UK, you apply to HMRC (ToR01) before your goods arrive.
- Should I ship my car from Australia?
- To the UK or Ireland, which also drive on the left, it can make sense. To continental Europe, a right-hand-drive car is often hard to register and resell.
- What about my superannuation?
- It generally stays in Australia. Temporary visa holders may be able to claim it after leaving — check the conditions that apply to you.
- Can I bring a small shipment by air?
- Yes. Air freight takes one to two weeks and suits a few cubic metres of essentials, while the rest of your home travels by sea.
