Before you leave Austria

• Deregister your address (Abmeldung) — You deregister your main residence at the registration office within three days before or after moving out. Keep the confirmation: it is often asked for at destination.
• Broadcasting fee and contracts — Deregister from the ORF broadcasting contribution, and cancel energy, internet, mobile and insurance contracts in good time. Keep the final bills.
• Tax, social insurance and pension — Inform your tax office of your departure, and check your social insurance and pension position if you have worked in Austria.
• Your Austrian-registered vehicle — A car leaving Austria for good is deregistered and its plates returned. Your new country then registers it under its own rules.
• Rental contract — Check your lease for its notice period and termination dates, and plan the handover of the flat before your move date.

Exporting your belongings from Austria

To another EU country: if Austria and your destination are both in the EU, your belongings travel freely. There is no export declaration and no customs clearance.
