Customs & paperwork into Luxembourg
Moving from another EU country
Moving to Luxembourg from another EU country involves no customs clearance and no import duty on your belongings.
After arrival, you declare your address at your commune. EU citizens staying longer than three months then register their residence.
Moving from outside the EU (UK, Switzerland, Norway, USA, and others)
From outside the EU — including the United Kingdom since Brexit, Switzerland, the USA and beyond — your used household goods can enter Luxembourg free of duty and VAT when you transfer your normal residence. To qualify:
- you have lived outside the EU for at least 12 consecutive months;
- you have owned and used your belongings for at least 6 months;
- you are transferring your normal residence to Luxembourg;
- your goods are imported within 12 months of settling.
Goods admitted duty-free must not be sold, lent or hired out during the first 12 months.
Luxembourg has no seaport: overseas containers arrive in Antwerp or Rotterdam and continue by road, often in under a day.
Documents usually required for customs clearance
- Valid passport
- Proof of your registration with your Luxembourg commune
- Proof of your previous residence outside the EU for at least 12 months
- Residence permit or work authorisation, if you are not an EU citizen
- A detailed, signed inventory of your belongings
Vehicles and restricted items
- Vehicles Vehicles can be imported with your household goods if you have owned and used them for at least 6 months, then registered in Luxembourg after a technical inspection.
- Alcohol and tobacco Excluded from the exemption when shipped from outside the EU, and taxed.
- Pets Pets travel separately from household goods. They need a microchip, a valid rabies vaccination and an EU pet passport or an official health certificate, depending on the country of origin.

How the price of your move to Luxembourg is calculated
Like every international mover, we build your price to Luxembourg from a few concrete factors:
- Volume — measured in cubic metres (m³) — the main cost driver. Our online volume calculator helps you estimate it room by room.
- Distance and route — measured on the actual road, from your door to your delivery address in Luxembourg.
- Transport mode — shared road load, a truck booked only for you, FCL or LCL by sea, or air for very small cargo.
- Services — packing, taking furniture apart and reassembling it, crating fragile pieces, storage, island delivery.
- Access — walk-up floors, pedestrian streets, long carries from the truck, and hoists where access is tight.
- Customs — clearance fees and port handling charges, where required by your route to Luxembourg.
- Insurance — a small percentage of the declared value — scalable to what you want covered.
Typical volumes, as a guide:
| Home | Typical volume |
|---|---|
| Studio | 10 to 15 m³ |
| 1-bedroom flat | 15 to 25 m³ |
| 2-bedroom home | 25 to 40 m³ |
| 3-bedroom home | 40 to 60 m³ |
| 4-bedroom house or larger | 60 m³ and more |
European road moves get a starting price straight from the estimator; everything else — sea, air, customs — is quoted in writing within 24 hours.
