Before you leave Switzerland
- Deregister from your commune — Before you leave, you deregister with the residents' office of your commune and receive a departure confirmation. Keep it: it is used to end your health insurance and taxes, and destination customs often ask for proof that you lived in Switzerland.
- Health insurance, taxes and pension — Your basic health insurance ends when you leave Switzerland, on presentation of your departure confirmation. Settle your taxes with the cantonal tax office, and check what happens to your pension fund (2nd pillar) and 3rd-pillar savings.
- Your Swiss-registered vehicle — A car leaving Switzerland is declared for export at the border with a copy of its Swiss registration document, and its plates are returned to the cantonal road traffic office. Your new country then registers it.
- Inventory of your belongings — Swiss export clearance is based on an inventory listing your address in Switzerland and abroad. The same list, in more detail, supports your duty-free import at destination — we prepare both with you.
- Rental contract — Swiss leases have fixed notice periods and termination dates. Check yours early; if you need to leave outside those dates, proposing a suitable replacement tenant may release you.
Exporting your belongings from Switzerland
To another EU country: if Switzerland and your destination are both in the EU, your belongings travel freely. There is no export declaration and no customs clearance.
To a country outside the EU: we file the export declaration in Switzerland on your behalf. What matters most is the import side: whether your belongings enter your new country free of duty depends on that country's rules. Each destination guide explains them.
Wherever you are going, prepare a detailed inventory of your belongings. It is required at destination for almost every move outside the EU, and it is the basis of your insurance.
Household goods are cleared for export at a Swiss commercial customs office on the basis of a detailed inventory. Clearance takes place on working days, during office hours — which is why we plan the border crossing with a fixed date. Your belongings are then imported into your destination country, usually duty-free if you are moving your main home.
How a move from Switzerland works
- Free quote. Share your origin, your delivery address in Switzerland and roughly how much you are moving. A written quote lands in your inbox within 24 hours.
- Survey and planning. Your coordinator rechecks the volume, locks the transport mode and lists the customs rules you fall under on your way to Switzerland.
- Packing and collection. Our local team packs, inventories and loads your belongings at your home in Switzerland.
- Transport. On the road for a European route, in a sea container across an ocean, or by air for small urgent shipments to Switzerland.
- Customs clearance (where required). Non-EU destinations get a two-sided customs file: we file the export from Switzerland and prepare the import at destination (Swiss export clearance and import declaration at destination).
- Delivery and set-up. Delivery to your new home, unpacking and furniture reassembly if included in your quote.
A single point of contact handles your move from Switzerland from estimate to delivery.
Modes and typical door-to-door times

How the price of your move from Switzerland is calculated
We price every move from Switzerland with the same ingredients — nothing hidden, nothing improvised:
- Volume — measured in cubic metres (m³) — the main cost driver. Our online volume calculator helps you estimate it room by room.
- Distance and route — the actual door-to-door distance to Switzerland, not a bird-flight shortcut.
- Transport mode — shared load, dedicated truck, sea container (shared or exclusive) or air freight.
- Services — everything beyond pure transport: packing, dismantling, crating, short-term storage, extra legs by ferry.
- Access — floors without a lift, narrow streets, long carry distances or the need for an external lift.
- Customs — brokerage, declaration and port handling charges on routes to Switzerland that cross a customs border.
- Insurance — priced as a percentage of what you tell us your belongings are worth.
Typical volumes, as a guide:
| Home | Typical volume |
|---|---|
| Studio | 10 to 15 m³ |
| 1-bedroom flat | 15 to 25 m³ |
| 2-bedroom home | 25 to 40 m³ |
| 3-bedroom home | 40 to 60 m³ |
| 4-bedroom house or larger | 60 m³ and more |

Frequently asked questions
- Is there customs paperwork when moving from Switzerland to the EU?
- Yes. Switzerland is outside the EU customs union: your belongings are cleared for export in Switzerland and imported into the EU country. Used household goods are usually duty-free if you are moving your main home.
- What document does Swiss customs need for my household goods?
- An inventory listing your belongings with your address in Switzerland and abroad. We prepare it with you, together with the import documents for your destination.
- Can my belongings cross the border on a Saturday?
- Usually not. Household goods are cleared at commercial customs offices on working days, so we plan the crossing on a weekday.
- Can I take my Swiss car with me?
- Yes. It is declared for export with a copy of its Swiss registration document, the plates go back to the cantonal office, and it is then registered in your new country.
- How long does a move from Switzerland take?
- To neighbouring countries, a dedicated truck delivers within a few days plus clearance. To Spain, Portugal or the UK, within about a week plus clearance. To North America, allow six to twelve weeks by sea container.
