Customs & paperwork into Sweden

Moving from another EU country

Moving to Sweden from another EU country involves no customs clearance and no import duty on your belongings.

If you plan to live in Sweden for at least a year, you register with the Swedish Tax Agency (folkbokföring). Your personal identity number then opens the door to banking, healthcare and most services.

Moving from outside the EU (UK, Switzerland, Norway, USA, and others)

From outside the EU — including Norway, the United Kingdom since Brexit, the USA and beyond — you do not pay customs duty or VAT on your personal belongings when you move to Sweden, if you meet the conditions:

  • you have lived outside the EU for at least 12 consecutive months;
  • you have owned and used your belongings for at least 6 months before the move;
  • you are moving your normal residence to Sweden;
  • your goods are imported within 12 months of your move.

The relief is claimed with Swedish Customs' declaration for personal belongings when migrating to Sweden, which we prepare with you.

Goods admitted duty-free must not be sold or lent during the first 12 months.

Moves from Norway cross a customs border even though both countries are in the EEA: we handle export and import at the border.

Documents usually required for customs clearance

  • Valid passport
  • Swedish Customs declaration for personal belongings (for non-EU moves)
  • A detailed inventory of your belongings
  • Proof of your previous residence outside the EU
  • Proof of your move to Sweden (employment contract, tenancy, residence permit)

Alcohol and tobacco are not covered by the relief and follow separate rules.

Vehicles and restricted items

  • Vehicles Vehicles can be included in the relief if the conditions are met. Before registration in Sweden, an imported vehicle goes through an origin check and a technical inspection.
  • Alcohol and tobacco Not covered by the relief and subject to Swedish excise rules.
  • Firearms Require a permit. Tell us before packing.
  • Pets Pets travel separately from household goods. They need a microchip, a valid rabies vaccination and an EU pet passport or an official health certificate, depending on the country of origin.

How the price of your move to Sweden is calculated

Your price to Sweden is built from a handful of concrete variables, the same for every international mover:

  • Volume — the single biggest lever on the price, in m³. The online calculator walks you through it one room at a time.
  • Distance and route — from your origin address to your new home in Sweden.
  • Transport mode — groupage, your own truck, shared or full container, air for urgent small shipments.
  • Services — packing, furniture dismantling and reassembly, fragile item crating, storage, delivery to an island.
  • Access — floors without a lift, narrow streets, long carry distances or the need for an external lift.
  • Customs — clearance fees and port handling charges, where required by your route to Sweden.
  • Insurance — calculated as a percentage of the declared value of your belongings.

Frequently asked questions

Do I pay customs duties when moving to Sweden from the UK or Norway?
Not if you qualify: at least 12 months living outside the EU, belongings owned and used for at least 6 months, and a move of your normal residence to Sweden.
Is there any customs paperwork when moving from another EU country?
No. Moves between EU countries involve no customs formalities and no import duty.
Why is there customs between Norway and Sweden?
Norway is in the European Economic Area but not in the EU customs union, so household goods crossing the border must be declared on both sides.

Yes, if you will live there for at least a year: you register with the Swedish Tax Agency to get your personal identity number.
How long does a move to Sweden take?
From neighbouring countries, a dedicated truck delivers within a few days. From Western Europe, usually within a week. From North America, allow six to ten weeks by sea container.
