Before you leave Belgium

• Declare your departure to your commune — You report your departure to your local commune at least the day before you leave. You receive a deregistration certificate, known as the Model 8: keep it, as you will need it to register with a Belgian consulate abroad, and destination authorities may ask for it.
• Your Belgian-registered vehicle — A car leaving Belgium for good is deregistered and its number plate cancelled with the vehicle registration service (DIV). Your new country then registers it under its own rules.
• Tax, health insurance and social security — Inform the tax administration of your new address abroad, and contact your health insurance fund (mutualité / ziekenfonds) to end or transfer your cover once your insurance abroad is arranged.
• Rental contract and inventory of fixtures — Check your lease for its notice period and conditions, and plan the exit inventory of fixtures (état des lieux / plaatsbeschrijving) before the keys are returned.
• Contracts and subscriptions — Cancel or transfer energy, water, internet, mobile and insurance contracts, and keep the final bills as proof of your Belgian address and departure date.

Exporting your belongings from Belgium

To another EU country: if Belgium and your destination are both in the EU, your belongings travel freely. There is no export declaration and no customs clearance.

To a country outside the EU: we file the export declaration in Belgium on your behalf. What matters most is the import side: whether your belongings enter your new country free of duty depends on that country's rules. Each destination guide explains them.

Moves from Belgium to the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway, the United States, Canada or any other non-EU country require an export declaration, which we file before departure. Overseas containers usually leave from Antwerp.

I am moving back to the UK after working in Brussels. What do I need?

We file the export declaration in Belgium. Before your goods arrive, you apply to HMRC for Transfer of Residence relief (ToR01) so your belongings can enter the UK duty-free.

Can I take my Belgian car with me?

Yes. It is deregistered in Belgium and its plate cancelled, then it is registered in your new country. Check the destination's import rules and registration costs first.

How long does a move from Belgium take?
