Before you leave Ireland
- Tax: tell Revenue you are leaving — When you leave Ireland, let Revenue know your departure date. If you stop working mid-year, you may be due a tax refund — keep your final payslip and employment details.
- Your Irish-registered vehicle — A car leaving Ireland for good is notified as permanently exported, using the relevant section of its vehicle registration certificate. Your new country then registers it under its own rules.
- Health, social welfare and pensions — Check what happens to your social welfare contributions and any occupational or private pension, and arrange health cover in your new country from your arrival date.
- Proof of your Irish residence — Destination customs usually ask for proof of how long you lived outside their territory: keep your lease, utility bills and employment records.
- Leases and contracts — Check the notice period in your tenancy, and cancel or transfer energy, broadband, mobile and insurance contracts in good time.
Exporting your belongings from Ireland
To another EU country: if Ireland and your destination are both in the EU, your belongings travel freely. There is no export declaration and no customs clearance.
To a country outside the EU: we file the export declaration in Ireland on your behalf. What matters most is the import side: whether your belongings enter your new country free of duty depends on that country's rules. Each destination guide explains them.
Wherever you are going, prepare a detailed inventory of your belongings. It is required at destination for almost every move outside the EU, and it is the basis of your insurance.
Moves from Ireland to Great Britain, Switzerland, Norway, the United States, Canada or any other non-EU country require an export declaration, which we file before departure. Moves to Northern Ireland follow specific arrangements — tell us your exact destination at quote stage. Overseas containers usually leave from Dublin or Cork.
How a move from Ireland works
- Free quote. Give us your departure address, your new home in Ireland and a rough volume. We send an online estimate right away and a written quote within a day.
- Survey and planning. A coordinator confirms your volume and the transport mode, and reviews the customs rules that apply to your move to Ireland.
- Packing and collection. A packing crew comes to your address, prepares every item and loads the truck or the container at your door.
- Transport. By road across Europe, or by sea container between continents — whichever best fits your route to Ireland.
- Customs clearance (where required). We prepare the export declaration in Ireland and the import file for your destination (Irish export declaration for non-EU destinations).
- Delivery and set-up. We deliver at your new address and, if you asked for it on the quote, unpack boxes and reassemble furniture.
A single point of contact handles your move from Ireland from estimate to delivery.

How the price of your move from Ireland is calculated
We price every move from Ireland with the same ingredients — nothing hidden, nothing improvised:
- Volume — the single biggest lever on the price, in m³. The online calculator walks you through it one room at a time.
- Distance and route — measured on the actual road, from your door to your delivery address in Ireland.
- Transport mode — groupage, your own truck, shared or full container, air for urgent small shipments.
- Services — packing, furniture dismantling and reassembly, fragile item crating, storage, delivery to an island.
- Access — top-floor flats with no lift, narrow lanes, long carries, external hoists when the stairs will not do.
- Customs — brokerage, declaration and port handling charges on routes to Ireland that cross a customs border.
- Insurance — priced as a percentage of what you tell us your belongings are worth.
Typical volumes, as a guide:
| Home | Typical volume |
|---|---|
| Studio | 10 to 15 m³ |
| 1-bedroom flat | 15 to 25 m³ |
| 2-bedroom home | 25 to 40 m³ |
| 3-bedroom home | 40 to 60 m³ |
| 4-bedroom house or larger | 60 m³ and more |
For road moves inside Europe, the estimator returns a starting price in two minutes. Sea freight, air freight and any move that crosses a customs border go through a written quote, delivered within 24 hours.
