Customs & paperwork into Denmark
Moving from another EU country
Moving to Denmark from another EU country involves no customs clearance and no import duty on your belongings.
After arrival, you register with the national register to get your CPR number, which you need for banking, healthcare and most services. EU citizens staying longer than three months also apply for a registration certificate.
Moving from outside the EU (UK, Switzerland, Norway, USA, and others)
From outside the EU — including Norway, the United Kingdom since Brexit, the USA and beyond — your household goods can enter Denmark free of duty and VAT if:
- you have lived outside the EU for at least 12 months;
- you have owned and used your belongings for at least 6 months, for personal use;
- you are taking up residence in Denmark;
- your goods are imported within 12 months of your Danish registration date.
The shipper and consignee must be the same person on the transport documents.
Alcohol, tea and coffee must be listed separately on your inventory.
Documents usually required for customs clearance
- Valid passport
- Danish customs declaration of personal property
- Inventory in English
- Proof of at least 12 months outside the EU (certificate from the authorities, lease or work contract)
- Proof of your Danish registration (health card or registration letter)
- For non-EU citizens: Danish work contract and lease
The same person must appear as shipper and consignee on the bill of lading or air waybill.
Vehicles and restricted items
- Vehicles Denmark charges a high registration tax on imported cars, which often makes shipping a car uneconomic. Get an estimate of the tax before deciding.
- Alcohol, tea and coffee Must be listed separately and may be taxed.
- Firearms Require a permit. Tell us before packing.
- Pets Pets travel separately from household goods. They need a microchip, a valid rabies vaccination and an EU pet passport or an official health certificate, depending on the country of origin.

|---|---|---|
| Germany, Sweden | Road — dedicated truck | 1 to 3 days |
| Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, Poland | Road — dedicated truck | 2 to 4 days |
| France, Switzerland, Austria | Road — dedicated truck | 2 to 5 days |
| Spain, Portugal, Italy | Road — dedicated truck | 4 to 7 days |

How the price of your move to Denmark is calculated
Your price to Denmark is built from a handful of concrete variables, the same for every international mover:
- Volume — in cubic metres: it drives most of the price. Use our room-by-room calculator for an accurate figure.
- Distance and route — the actual door-to-door distance to Denmark, not a bird-flight shortcut.
- Transport mode — shared road load, a truck booked only for you, FCL or LCL by sea, or air for very small cargo.
- Services — everything beyond pure transport: packing, dismantling, crating, short-term storage, extra legs by ferry.
- Access — top-floor flats with no lift, narrow lanes, long carries, external hoists when the stairs will not do.
- Customs — declaration fees and port or airport handling, when the route to Denmark crosses a customs border.
- Insurance — priced as a percentage of what you tell us your belongings are worth.
Typical volumes, as a guide:
| Home | Typical volume |
|---|---|
| Studio | 10 to 15 m³ |
| 1-bedroom flat | 15 to 25 m³ |
| 2-bedroom home | 25 to 40 m³ |
| 3-bedroom home | 40 to 60 m³ |
| 4-bedroom house or larger | 60 m³ and more |
