Pick your destination country
Moving abroad means two moves at once: your belongings travel from one home to another, and your life moves from one administration to another. Each destination has its own rules — which documents customs asks for, whether your furniture enters duty-free, how long the truck or the container takes. Pick your destination below to see what applies to your move.
What you'll find in each destination guide
Every destination guide covers the same essentials, written for that country:
- Customs and import rules — whether your used household goods enter free of duty and VAT, the conditions to meet, and the documents to prepare.
- Transit times — by dedicated truck, shared load, sea container or air freight, from the most common departure countries.
- Restricted items — what you cannot ship, or can only ship with a permit.
- Questions people ask before moving — answered in plain English.
Moving within the EU or crossing a customs border?
Between two EU countries, your belongings travel freely: no customs declaration, no duty. As soon as your move crosses a customs border — into or out of the UK, Switzerland or Norway, or between continents — it becomes an export followed by an import. In most cases your used belongings still enter duty-free under transfer of residence relief, provided you prepare the right paperwork. Our guide to transfer of residence relief explains how it works.
