Before you leave France
- Update your tax situation — Report your change of address and your departure to the French tax authorities. Leaving France changes your tax residency, and you file a final return covering the part of the year you lived there. Check with an adviser if you keep income or property in France.
- Health insurance and social security — Inform your health insurance fund (CPAM) and any complementary insurer of your departure, and check how you will be covered in your new country.
- Contracts and final bills — Give notice on your rental agreement, energy, internet and insurance contracts. Keep the final bills and your notice letters: they prove the date you left France, which customs at destination may ask for.
- Your French-registered vehicle — If you take your car abroad, keep its French registration certificate (carte grise): your new country will need it to register the vehicle. Check the import rules of your destination before shipping.
- French citizens moving outside the EU — Some countries ask for a change of residence certificate. French nationals can also register with the French consulate in their new country, which simplifies later formalities.
Exporting your belongings from France
To another EU country: if France and your destination are both in the EU, your belongings travel freely. There is no export declaration and no customs clearance.
To a country outside the EU: we file the export declaration in France on your behalf. What matters most is the import side: whether your belongings enter your new country free of duty depends on that country's rules. Each destination guide explains them.
Wherever you are going, prepare a detailed inventory of your belongings. It is required at destination for almost every move outside the EU, and it is the basis of your insurance.
Moves from France to the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway, the United States, Canada or any other non-EU country require an export declaration, which we file before departure. France's overseas departments (Réunion, Martinique, Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Mayotte) also follow specific formalities.

How the price of your move from France is calculated
We price every move from France with the same ingredients — nothing hidden, nothing improvised:
- Volume — the single biggest lever on the price, in m³. The online calculator walks you through it one room at a time.
- Distance and route — from your origin address to your new home in France.
- Transport mode — shared road load, a truck booked only for you, FCL or LCL by sea, or air for very small cargo.
- Services — everything beyond pure transport: packing, dismantling, crating, short-term storage, extra legs by ferry.
- Access — top-floor flats with no lift, narrow lanes, long carries, external hoists when the stairs will not do.
- Customs — declaration fees and port or airport handling, when the route to France crosses a customs border.
- Insurance — a small percentage of the declared value — scalable to what you want covered.
Typical volumes, as a guide:
| Home | Typical volume |
|---|---|
| Studio | 10 to 15 m³ |
| 1-bedroom flat | 15 to 25 m³ |
| 2-bedroom home | 25 to 40 m³ |
| 3-bedroom home | 40 to 60 m³ |
| 4-bedroom house or larger | 60 m³ and more |

Frequently asked questions
- Is there any customs paperwork when moving from France to another EU country?
- No. Moves between EU countries involve no export declaration and no customs clearance.
- I am British and moving back to the UK from France. What do I need?
- The move involves an export declaration in France, which we file, and an import into the UK. Apply for Transfer of Residence relief (ToR01) with HMRC before your belongings arrive so they can enter duty-free.
- Do I need to tell the French tax authorities that I am leaving?
- Yes. Report your new address and departure date: your tax residency changes and you file a final return for the part of the year you lived in France.
- Can you collect from Corsica?
- Yes. Corsica follows mainland rules; transit is slightly longer because of the ferry crossing.
- How long does a move from France take?
- To neighbouring countries, a dedicated truck delivers within a few days. To North America, allow six to twelve weeks by sea container.
