Before you leave Netherlands
- Deregister from your municipality — When you emigrate, you deregister from the Personal Records Database (BRP) with your municipality, at the earliest 5 days before you leave and at the latest on your day of departure. Ask for an international proof of deregistration: it is often needed to register in your new country.
- Health insurance and allowances — Your Dutch basic health insurance normally ends when you deregister. Arrange cover in your new country, and stop any allowances or benefits linked to your Dutch residence.
- Tax — Inform the Tax Administration of your emigration. In the year you leave, you usually file a specific return covering the part of the year you lived in the Netherlands.
- Your Dutch-registered vehicle — If you take your car abroad, its Dutch registration is ended for export through the RDW, and your new country registers it under its own rules. Check the destination's import costs first.
- Contracts and final bills — Give notice on your rental agreement, energy, internet and insurance. Keep the final bills: they prove the date you left.
Exporting your belongings from Netherlands
To another EU country: if Netherlands and your destination are both in the EU, your belongings travel freely. There is no export declaration and no customs clearance.
To a country outside the EU: we file the export declaration in Netherlands on your behalf. What matters most is the import side: whether your belongings enter your new country free of duty depends on that country's rules. Each destination guide explains them.
Wherever you are going, prepare a detailed inventory of your belongings. It is required at destination for almost every move outside the EU, and it is the basis of your insurance.
Moves from the Netherlands to the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway, the United States, Canada or any other non-EU country require an export declaration, which we file before departure. Sea containers usually leave from Rotterdam.
How a move from Netherlands works
- Free quote. Tell us your origin, destination in Netherlands and approximate volume. You receive an online estimate and a detailed quote within 24 hours.
- Survey and planning. Your coordinator rechecks the volume, locks the transport mode and lists the customs rules you fall under on your way to Netherlands.
- Packing and collection. A packing crew comes to your address, prepares every item and loads the truck or the container at your door.
- Transport. On the road for a European route, in a sea container across an ocean, or by air for small urgent shipments to Netherlands.
- Customs clearance (where required). When your route crosses a customs border, we file both sides: the Netherlands export and the import at your new country (Dutch export declaration for non-EU destinations).
- Delivery and set-up. Delivery to your new home, unpacking and furniture reassembly if included in your quote.
The same coordinator sees your move from Netherlands through, from your first email to the keys being handed over.

How the price of your move from Netherlands is calculated
We price every move from Netherlands with the same ingredients — nothing hidden, nothing improvised:
- Volume — the single biggest lever on the price, in m³. The online calculator walks you through it one room at a time.
- Distance and route — measured on the actual road, from your door to your delivery address in Netherlands.
- Transport mode — groupage, your own truck, shared or full container, air for urgent small shipments.
- Services — packing, taking furniture apart and reassembling it, crating fragile pieces, storage, island delivery.
- Access — walk-up floors, pedestrian streets, long carries from the truck, and hoists where access is tight.
- Customs — clearance fees and port handling charges, where required by your route to Netherlands.
- Insurance — priced as a percentage of what you tell us your belongings are worth.
Typical volumes, as a guide:

Frequently asked questions
- When do I need to deregister from my municipality?
- At the earliest 5 days before you leave and at the latest on your departure day. Ask for an international proof of deregistration, which is only issued if your deregistration date matches your departure date.
- Is there any customs paperwork when moving from the Netherlands to another EU country?
- No. Moves between EU countries involve no export declaration and no customs clearance.
- Can my container leave from Rotterdam?
- Yes. Rotterdam is the usual departure port for sea containers from the Netherlands, which keeps transit times short.
- I am moving back to the UK. What do I need?
- We file the export declaration in the Netherlands. Apply for Transfer of Residence relief (ToR01) with HMRC before your belongings arrive so they can enter the UK duty-free.
- How long does a move from the Netherlands take?
- To neighbouring countries, a dedicated truck delivers within a few days. To Spain or Portugal, within a week. To North America, allow five to eleven weeks by sea container.
