Before you leave Bulgaria

• Your address registration — Update or cancel your address registration with your municipality, and — if you are a foreign resident — tell the migration directorate you are leaving.
• Your Bulgarian-registered vehicle — Deregister the car for export with the traffic police (KAT), then register it in your new country.
• Tax and social security — Inform the National Revenue Agency (NAP) of your departure and keep a record of your social security contributions.
• Property and utilities — If you are selling or letting a property, arrange the handover and final meter readings before collection day.

Exporting your belongings from Bulgaria

To another EU country: if Bulgaria and your destination are both in the EU, your belongings travel freely. There is no export declaration and no customs clearance.

To a country outside the EU: we file the export declaration in Bulgaria on your behalf. What matters most is the import side: whether your belongings enter your new country free of duty depends on that country's rules. Each destination guide explains them.

Wherever you are going, prepare a detailed inventory of your belongings. It is required at destination for almost every move outside the EU, and it is the basis of your insurance.

For the UK, Switzerland, Norway and destinations outside Europe, we file the Bulgarian export declaration. Containers usually leave from Varna or Burgas, or via Constanța and Thessaloniki.
