Before you leave Canada
- Tell the CRA you are leaving — When you emigrate, you tell the Canada Revenue Agency your departure date. Leaving Canada can have tax consequences — for example on some of the property you own — so check your position before you go.
- Provincial health coverage — Your provincial health insurance usually ends once you stop living in the province. Tell your provincial plan when you leave and arrange cover in your new country from day one.
- Your vehicle — A vehicle leaving Canada must be reported to the Canada Border Services Agency before export, with its ownership documents. Check your destination's import rules and registration costs first — they vary a lot between countries.
- Proof of residence for duty-free import — Your destination will usually admit your used belongings duty-free if you can show you lived outside it — typically for 12 months — and owned your goods for 6 months. Keep your lease, bills and employment records.
- Voltage and appliances — Canada uses 120 V; Europe uses 230 V. Large appliances are rarely worth shipping to Europe — sell them and keep the space for furniture and personal belongings.
Exporting your belongings from Canada
To another EU country: if Canada and your destination are both in the EU, your belongings travel freely. There is no export declaration and no customs clearance.
To a country outside the EU: we file the export declaration in Canada on your behalf. What matters most is the import side: whether your belongings enter your new country free of duty depends on that country's rules. Each destination guide explains them.
Wherever you are going, prepare a detailed inventory of your belongings. It is required at destination for almost every move outside the EU, and it is the basis of your insurance.
Your belongings travel by sea container — your own (FCL) or shared (LCL) — usually from Montreal or Halifax for the East and Vancouver for the West. We coordinate the export formalities and port booking in Canada and prepare the import file for your destination, including the transfer of residence relief in the EU or the UK.
How a move from Canada works
- Free quote. Tell us your origin, destination in Canada and approximate volume. You receive an online estimate and a detailed quote within 24 hours.
- Survey and planning. Your coordinator rechecks the volume, locks the transport mode and lists the customs rules you fall under on your way to Canada.
- Packing and collection. We bring the packing materials to your home, inventory each piece and load everything on moving day.
- Transport. Your belongings travel by the mode that fits your route to Canada: dedicated truck or shared load within Europe, sea container or air freight otherwise.
- Customs clearance (where required). When your route crosses a customs border, we file both sides: the Canada export and the import at your new country (Canadian export formalities and port booking).
- Delivery and set-up. We deliver at your new address and, if you asked for it on the quote, unpack boxes and reassemble furniture.
A single point of contact handles your move from Canada from estimate to delivery.
Modes and typical door-to-door times
Expect the figures below as indicative door-to-door windows; season, addresses and customs clearance can all shift them.
| To | Mode | Typical door-to-door time |
|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom, Ireland | Sea — own container (FCL) | 6 to 10 weeks |
| France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany | Sea — own container (FCL) | 6 to 10 weeks |
| Spain, Portugal, Italy | Sea — own container (FCL) | 7 to 11 weeks |
| Europe from Western Canada | Sea — own container (FCL) | 8 to 12 weeks |
| Europe | Sea — shared container (LCL) | Add 2 to 4 weeks |
| Middle East | Sea container | 8 to 12 weeks |
| Asia, Australia, New Zealand | Sea container | 8 to 14 weeks |
| Anywhere | Air freight (small volumes) | 1 to 2 weeks |
Door-to-door transit times are indicative and depend on the season, sailing schedules, the exact addresses and customs clearance at destination.
How the price of your move from Canada is calculated
We price every move from Canada with the same ingredients — nothing hidden, nothing improvised:
- Volume — the single biggest lever on the price, in m³. The online calculator walks you through it one room at a time.
- Distance and route — measured on the actual road, from your door to your delivery address in Canada.
- Transport mode — shared load, dedicated truck, sea container (shared or exclusive) or air freight.
- Services — everything beyond pure transport: packing, dismantling, crating, short-term storage, extra legs by ferry.
- Access — walk-up floors, pedestrian streets, long carries from the truck, and hoists where access is tight.
- Customs — brokerage, declaration and port handling charges on routes to Canada that cross a customs border.
- Insurance — a small percentage of the declared value — scalable to what you want covered.
Typical volumes, as a guide:
| Home | Typical volume |
|---|---|
| Studio | 10 to 15 m³ |
| 1-bedroom flat | 15 to 25 m³ |
| 2-bedroom home | 25 to 40 m³ |
| 3-bedroom home | 40 to 60 m³ |
| 4-bedroom house or larger | 60 m³ and more |
For road moves inside Europe, the estimator returns a starting price in two minutes. Sea freight, air freight and any move that crosses a customs border go through a written quote, delivered within 24 hours.

Frequently asked questions
- How long does a move from Canada to Europe take?
- Usually six to ten weeks door to door by own container from Eastern Canada, and eight to twelve weeks from the West Coast. A shared container takes longer.
- Will I pay import duty on my furniture in Europe?
- Usually not, if you move your main home and qualify for transfer of residence relief: generally 12 months living outside the EU or the UK and belongings owned for 6 months.
- 20ft or 40ft container from Canada?
- A 20-foot container suits most one- to two-bedroom homes, a 40-foot container larger houses. Small volumes travel in a shared container.
- Can I ship my car from Canada?
- Yes. It is reported to the CBSA before export, then imported and registered in your new country. Check registration taxes at destination first.
- Should I take my appliances?
- To Europe, usually not: Canada uses 120 V and Europe 230 V. Most families sell large appliances before the move.
