Before you leave Finland

• Notify DVV of your move abroad — When you move abroad from Finland, you notify the Digital and Population Data Services Agency (DVV), online or with a form.
• Kela benefits — If you move abroad for more than six months, the move is considered permanent and your Kela benefit rights generally end. Inform Kela of your move.
• Tax — Check your tax position with the Finnish Tax Administration (Vero) before leaving, especially if you keep income or property in Finland.
• Your Finnish-registered vehicle — A car leaving Finland for good is deregistered for export with Traficom. Your new country then registers it under its own rules.
• Contracts and subscriptions — Cancel or transfer electricity, internet, mobile and insurance contracts in good time, and keep the final bills as proof of your departure date.

Exporting your belongings from Finland

To another EU country: if Finland and your destination are both in the EU, your belongings travel freely. There is no export declaration and no customs clearance.

To a country outside the EU: we file the export declaration in Finland on your behalf. What matters most is the import side: whether your belongings enter your new country free of duty depends on that country's rules. Each destination guide explains them.

Wherever you are going, prepare a detailed inventory of your belongings. It is required at destination for almost every move outside the EU, and it is the basis of your insurance.

Moves from Finland to the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway, the United States, Canada or any other non-EU country require an export declaration, which we file before departure. Your belongings usually leave by ferry from Helsinki or Turku, and overseas containers from Helsinki (Vuosaari) or Kotka.
