Before you leave Italy

  • Italian citizens: register with AIRE — If you are an Italian citizen moving abroad for more than 12 months, you register with AIRE, the registry of Italians resident abroad, through the Italian consulate covering your new address — within 90 days of moving. This also removes you from your municipality's resident register.
  • Foreign residents: cancel your residence — If you are not an Italian citizen, tell your municipality's registry office (anagrafe) that you are leaving, so your residence is cancelled for emigration. Keep the confirmation: it is often asked for at destination.
  • Your Italian-registered vehicle — A car leaving Italy for good is deregistered for export (radiazione per esportazione) at the public vehicle register. Your new country then registers it under its own rules.
  • Tax, health and utilities — Check your tax position with the Agenzia delle Entrate, end your registration with the national health service once your cover abroad is arranged, and cancel utilities, internet and phone contracts in good time.
  • Rental contract — Residential leases in Italy usually require written notice — often six months unless your contract says otherwise. Check yours early and keep proof of the notice.

Exporting your belongings from Italy

To another EU country: if Italy and your destination are both in the EU, your belongings travel freely. There is no export declaration and no customs clearance.

To a country outside the EU: we file the export declaration in Italy on your behalf. What matters most is the import side: whether your belongings enter your new country free of duty depends on that country's rules. Each destination guide explains them.

Wherever you are going, prepare a detailed inventory of your belongings. It is required at destination for almost every move outside the EU, and it is the basis of your insurance.

Moves from Italy to the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway, the United States, Canada or any other non-EU country require an export declaration, which we file before departure. Overseas containers usually leave from Genoa, La Spezia, Livorno or Naples.

How a move from Italy works

  1. Free quote. Tell us your origin, destination in Italy and approximate volume. You receive an online estimate and a detailed quote within 24 hours.
  2. Survey and planning. Your coordinator rechecks the volume, locks the transport mode and lists the customs rules you fall under on your way to Italy.
  3. Packing and collection. We bring the packing materials to your home, inventory each piece and load everything on moving day.
  4. Transport. Your belongings travel by the mode that fits your route to Italy: dedicated truck or shared load within Europe, sea container or air freight otherwise.
  5. Customs clearance (where required). When your route crosses a customs border, we file both sides: the Italy export and the import at your new country (Italian export declaration for non-EU destinations).
  6. Delivery and set-up. We deliver at your new address and, if you asked for it on the quote, unpack boxes and reassemble furniture.

A single point of contact handles your move from Italy from estimate to delivery.

How the price of your move from Italy is calculated

Like every international mover, we build your price from Italy from a few concrete factors:

  • Volume — the single biggest lever on the price, in m³. The online calculator walks you through it one room at a time.
  • Distance and route — from your origin address to your new home in Italy.
  • Transport mode — groupage, your own truck, shared or full container, air for urgent small shipments.
  • Services — packing, taking furniture apart and reassembling it, crating fragile pieces, storage, island delivery.
  • Access — walk-up floors, pedestrian streets, long carries from the truck, and hoists where access is tight.
  • Customs — brokerage, declaration and port handling charges on routes to Italy that cross a customs border.
  • Insurance — priced as a percentage of what you tell us your belongings are worth.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to register with AIRE when I leave Italy?
Yes, if you are an Italian citizen moving abroad for more than 12 months. Registration is done through the consulate covering your new address, within 90 days of moving.
Is there customs paperwork when moving from Italy to another EU country?
No. Moves between EU countries involve no export declaration and no customs clearance.
I am moving from Italy to the UK or Switzerland. What changes?
Your belongings are exported from the EU and imported into the UK or Switzerland. We file the Italian export declaration; on arrival, used household goods can usually enter duty-free if you are moving your main home there.
Can I take my Italian car with me?
Yes. It is deregistered for export in Italy, then registered in your new country. Check the destination's import rules and registration costs first — they vary a lot.
How long does a move from Italy take?
To Switzerland, Austria or France, a dedicated truck delivers within a few days. To Spain, Portugal or the UK, within about a week. To North America, allow six to twelve weeks by sea container.
