Before you leave Malta
- Residence and ID — If you hold a Maltese residence or ID card, tell Identità you are leaving for good, and keep proof of your departure date for your destination.
- Tax and social security — Inform the tax authorities and social security of your departure, especially if you have worked in Malta, and keep your final payslips.
- Your Maltese-registered vehicle — A car leaving Malta for good is deregistered for export with Transport Malta. Maltese cars are right-hand drive — check whether it is worth registering one in your new country.
- Leaving an island — Your belongings leave Malta by sea — usually by ferry to Sicily or by container — before continuing by road or ship. Allow extra time, especially in summer.
- Contracts and subscriptions — Cancel or transfer electricity, internet, mobile and insurance contracts in good time, and keep the final bills as proof of your departure date.
Exporting your belongings from Malta
To another EU country: if Malta and your destination are both in the EU, your belongings travel freely. There is no export declaration and no customs clearance.
To a country outside the EU: we file the export declaration in Malta on your behalf. What matters most is the import side: whether your belongings enter your new country free of duty depends on that country's rules. Each destination guide explains them.
Wherever you are going, prepare a detailed inventory of your belongings. It is required at destination for almost every move outside the EU, and it is the basis of your insurance.
Malta is in the EU: moves to another EU country need no customs formalities. Moves to the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway or outside Europe require an export declaration, which we file before departure. Containers leave from the Malta Freeport or Valletta.
How a move from Malta works
- Free quote. Share your origin, your delivery address in Malta and roughly how much you are moving. A written quote lands in your inbox within 24 hours.
- Survey and planning. A coordinator confirms your volume and the transport mode, and reviews the customs rules that apply to your move to Malta.
- Packing and collection. We bring the packing materials to your home, inventory each piece and load everything on moving day.
- Transport. By road across Europe, or by sea container between continents — whichever best fits your route to Malta.
- Customs clearance (where required). Non-EU destinations get a two-sided customs file: we file the export from Malta and prepare the import at destination (Maltese export declaration for non-EU destinations).
- Delivery and set-up. We deliver at your new address and, if you asked for it on the quote, unpack boxes and reassemble furniture.
A single point of contact handles your move from Malta from estimate to delivery.

How the price of your move from Malta is calculated
Like every international mover, we build your price from Malta from a few concrete factors:
- Volume — in cubic metres: it drives most of the price. Use our room-by-room calculator for an accurate figure.
- Distance and route — measured on the actual road, from your door to your delivery address in Malta.
- Transport mode — shared load, dedicated truck, sea container (shared or exclusive) or air freight.
- Services — packing, furniture dismantling and reassembly, fragile item crating, storage, delivery to an island.
- Access — walk-up floors, pedestrian streets, long carries from the truck, and hoists where access is tight.
- Customs — clearance fees and port handling charges, where required by your route to Malta.
- Insurance — priced as a percentage of what you tell us your belongings are worth.
Typical volumes, as a guide:

Frequently asked questions
- Is there customs paperwork when moving to another EU country?
- No. Moves between EU countries involve no export declaration and no customs clearance.
- How do my belongings leave Malta?
- By sea — usually by ferry to Sicily, then by road, or by container from the Malta Freeport.
- I am moving back to the UK from Malta. What do I need?
- We file the export declaration. Before your goods arrive, you apply to HMRC for Transfer of Residence relief (ToR01) so your belongings can enter the UK duty-free.
- Can I take my Maltese car with me?
- Yes. It is deregistered for export, then registered in your new country. Malta drives on the left, so registering a right-hand-drive car in continental Europe can be harder.
- How long does a move from Malta to the UK take?
- Usually one to three weeks door to door, plus customs clearance, depending on the sea route and the season.
