Before you leave Slovenia

• Deregister your residence — Report your departure to your local administrative unit so your Slovenian residence is cancelled, and keep the confirmation for the authorities in your new country.
• Your Slovenian car — Deregister the vehicle for export before it leaves, then register it in your new country under that country's rules.
• Tax and health insurance — Tell the Financial Administration (FURS) and your health insurer (ZZZS) that you are moving abroad, especially if you have been employed in Slovenia.
• Housing and utilities — Give notice on your lease as your contract requires, and close electricity, internet and phone accounts with a final reading.

Exporting your belongings from Slovenia

To another EU country: if Slovenia and your destination are both in the EU, your belongings travel freely. There is no export declaration and no customs clearance.

To a country outside the EU: we file the export declaration in Slovenia on your behalf. What matters most is the import side: whether your belongings enter your new country free of duty depends on that country's rules. Each destination guide explains them.

Leaving the EU — for the UK, Switzerland, Norway or another continent — means an export declaration, which we file before departure. Sea containers usually leave from Koper, Slovenia's own port on the Adriatic.
