Before you leave United States
- Plan your arrival paperwork early — What matters most is your destination's import rules: in most of Europe, your household goods enter duty-free if you are moving your main home and have owned them for at least 6 months. Your visa or residence permit is usually needed for clearance, so start that process first.
- Taxes — US citizens and green card holders generally remain required to file US tax returns while living abroad. Talk to a tax adviser before you leave, especially if you keep property or investments in the US.
- Exporting a vehicle — To export a used vehicle, the original title and the electronic export filing must be presented to US Customs at least 72 hours before export. Check first whether your car can be registered at destination: many US models need costly modifications in Europe.
- Electrical appliances — Most of Europe uses 230 V and different plugs. Large US appliances such as washers, dryers and refrigerators are often not worth shipping; transformers suit small electronics only.
- Mail, banking and insurance — Set up mail forwarding, tell your bank you are moving abroad and check whether your accounts and cards can be kept, and arrange health insurance for your new country.
Exporting your belongings from United States
To another EU country: if United States and your destination are both in the EU, your belongings travel freely. There is no export declaration and no customs clearance.
To a country outside the EU: we file the export declaration in United States on your behalf. What matters most is the import side: whether your belongings enter your new country free of duty depends on that country's rules. Each destination guide explains them.
Wherever you are going, prepare a detailed inventory of your belongings. It is required at destination for almost every move outside the EU, and it is the basis of your insurance.
We arrange the US export formalities and book space from the port nearest to you — New York/New Jersey, Baltimore, Savannah, Miami, Houston, Los Angeles or Seattle.

How your belongings travel — mode by mode
Door-to-door transit times are indicative and depend on the season, the exact addresses and, where required, customs clearance.
| To | Mode | Typical door-to-door time |
|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom, Ireland | Sea — own container (FCL) from the East Coast | 6 to 10 weeks |
| France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany | Sea — own container (FCL) from the East Coast | 6 to 10 weeks |
| Spain, Portugal, Italy | Sea — own container (FCL) from the East Coast | 6 to 10 weeks |
| Switzerland, Austria | Sea to a European port, then road | 7 to 11 weeks |
| Any European destination | Sea — own container (FCL) from the West Coast | 8 to 12 weeks |
| Any European destination | Sea — shared container (LCL) | Add 2 to 4 weeks to FCL times |
| Anywhere | Air freight (small volumes) | 1 to 2 weeks |
Door-to-door times are indicative and include packing, export formalities, ocean transit, customs clearance at destination and delivery.
A 20-foot container suits most 1- to 2-bedroom homes; a 40-foot container suits larger houses.
How the price of your move from United States is calculated
Your price from United States is built from a handful of concrete variables, the same for every international mover:
- Volume — the single biggest lever on the price, in m³. The online calculator walks you through it one room at a time.
- Distance and route — the actual door-to-door distance to United States, not a bird-flight shortcut.
- Transport mode — shared road load, a truck booked only for you, FCL or LCL by sea, or air for very small cargo.
- Services — packing, taking furniture apart and reassembling it, crating fragile pieces, storage, island delivery.
- Access — floors without a lift, narrow streets, long carry distances or the need for an external lift.
- Customs — brokerage, declaration and port handling charges on routes to United States that cross a customs border.
- Insurance — priced as a percentage of what you tell us your belongings are worth.
Typical volumes, as a guide:
| Home | Typical volume |
|---|---|
| Studio | 10 to 15 m³ |
| 1-bedroom flat | 15 to 25 m³ |
| 2-bedroom home | 25 to 40 m³ |
| 3-bedroom home | 40 to 60 m³ |
| 4-bedroom house or larger | 60 m³ and more |
